In January 2009, Regarding Susan Sontag entered production. The project team headed for Paris, London, and Johannesburg to film interviews with friends and colleagues of Susan Sontag. The journey began in Paris, where Nancy Kates and Veronica Selver spoke with filmmaker Noel Burch, Dominique Bourgois, and Monique de Rothschild. In South Africa, Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer shared recollections of her friendship with Sontag. The team spoke with abstract painter Sir Howard Hodgkin and opera critic Anthony Peattie in London. The project must raise more funding before we continue with U.S. production.
In November 2008, Director Nancy Kates pitched Regarding Susan Sontag to an international forum at IDFA. The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam is the world’s largest documentary film festival and a marketplace for new docs from around the world. Regarding Susan Sontag was one of only two seedling project from the US invited to present.
We screened our ten-minute fundraising trailer at the IFP Market in New York, where it was enthusiastically received.
NEA and ITVS provide seed funding to Regarding Susan Sontag.
We are still far from our fundraising goals, and hope visitors to the site will consider supporting our work.
